Pompey had to battle from behind before securing an ultimately comfortable win over Cambridge at Fratton Park.
The 3-1 victory ensured that the gap to second place in the League One standings remains at six points.
Danny Andrew's header for the visitors was adjudged to have crossed the line, but Kusini Yengi levelled from the spot for John Mousinho's men.
Myles Peart-Harris then converted Paddy Lane's low cross after the break before a fine Abu Kamara strike completed the scoring.
